





John-Michael Powell (JM) is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker with a passion for telling bold, elevated stories
across genres. As a writer-director, JM recently wrapped production on Violent Ends, a thriller starring
Billy Magnussen, Alexandra Shipp, James Badge Dale, Kate Burton, Nick Stahl and Ray McKinnon. JM previously
directed The Send-Off, starring Zachary Ray Sherman, which won the audience award at Jeff Nichols’ film festival,
Filmland, and earned JM a Panavision New Filmmakers grant.
Before his time as a writer/director, John-Michael edited numerous independent films and television series. His
more notable films included Women is Losers (SXSW/HBO), Obselidia (Sundance), It Happened in L.A. (Sundance),
All the Wilderness (SXSW) , and Bleeding Heart (Tribeca). His more notable television works include the hit Netflix series
Dear White People, the pilot for Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg's Sausage Party: Foodtopia at Amazon, and the pilot for
the Amazon western-comedy Western, produced by Lord & Miller. He received an Emmy for the Netflix documentary
series American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing, directed by Russ Floyd.
John-Michael is a partner at Midnight Road Entertainment and runs Cinesthesia, a substack dedicated
to independent cinema.
